Understanding the Differences: Graphic Design vs Canva Design

I have been designing using Adobe programs since the age of 16 (I am now 40), and I will continue to do so. But then came the tech shift…if one more client said “ooh please look at what I did in Canva” I was going scream. I swore never to use Canva. A true graphic designer doesn’t use Canva. We design from scratch, come up with unique designs.

As entrepreneurs, we know the digital world is constantly changing. You have to change and adapt with it. Find where it fits into your business model and leverage it in your favour.

So, in keeping with my honest and transparency promise, I have to admit – I use Canva!

But let me explain…
When it comes to creating visually appealing and effective designs, there are two main approaches that are commonly used in today’s digital world – Graphic design and Canva design. While both methods involve designing visual elements, each approach has its own unique characteristics and purposes.

Graphic Design
One of the significant advantages of graphic design is its flexibility and versatility. Designers have complete control over every aspect of their creation – from choosing fonts to manipulating images – allowing for endless possibilities in terms of creativity. This level of control also enables designers to cater to specific client needs and tailor their designs accordingly.
But it comes at a cost, and sometimes a cost that clients can’t afford. So, we adapt, we analyse the project and see if the Canva route will be an option, still offering the client a high-quality output.

Canva Design
One of the biggest advantages of using Canva for design is its user-friendly interface. The platform has a drag-and-drop feature that allows you to easily add and arrange elements on your design canvas. Additionally, there are numerous templates available for different types of designs such as social media posts, flyers, presentations, and more. Another advantage of using Canva is its vast library of high-quality images, illustrations, icons, and fonts. These assets can significantly enhance the overall look and feel of your design.

So, inconclusion my take on using Canva is this;

If you are a freelance designer; use it to save time and therefore saving you money. Your creative eye will help you customise the already existing templates and offer your clients a high-quality product.

If you are a small business or startup; use it to create your social media posts, stories and reels if you do not have budget to hire someone to do it for you. It is also great for those small business or startup who want to be more hands on in their business.

I really hope this article cleared up some uncertainties you may have had.
